SAMER MEMORIAL WINDOWS
The Teen Underground space at the Niles-Maine library is a cozy, colorful and inviting space, filled with games, art activities, books and comics amid a plethora of bean bag chairs. In the windows, facing the busy intersection of Oakton and Waukegan Roads outside, there was a paper sign reading, We Miss You, Samer.
On the third anniversary of Samer's tragic death in that intersection, friends and family members gathered to make the window memorial more permanent. Inspired by Samer's own artwork, pieces of stained glass were arranged and adhered with silicone adhesive to plexiglass panels, which were then hung in welded steel frames.
Many thanks to Rachel Colias, Teen Underground Librarian Extraordinaire, who arranged the memorial event and made this very special project run smoothly from inception to completion. And many more thanks to Steve Horwath, who volunteered a full day to help me design and weld these complicated triangular frames, and Jim Callihan at MCM Framing for both 1/8" and 1/4" plexiglass sheets. Most generous friends!
